The Discovery of all things Vermont

Imagine it is the middle of the most drastic economic downturn in decades. The housing market is crashing, people are being laid off right and left, now your partner says, “SO Hypothetically speaking, what if I were offered a job in New Hampshire”? Yes, this really happened.

Lew and I had been living in Pennsylvania for quite a while, his job was sporadic, construction in those days was scarce, and finding work was getting harder and harder. I, on the other hand, had a great job that I had had for nearly 10 years. Leaving an architectural job in that time frame was truly ludicrous.

Let us not forget that New Hampshire or Vermont seemed colder than cold, and not even close to a fun place to live. Insert all the laughing emojis. Clearly, I knew Nothing about either state. But we were both up for the move.

After the hypothetical, and I nearly threw up, we began a true discovery of what was to come next. If I had to say when our lives as a couple really began, this was it. The universe started throwing breadcrumbs on the ground and we just kept picking them up.

The job was offered and taken. My job was ended, with little joy to my employers, and we headed north. Our first stop was New Hampshire at a little town called Sunapee. A short six months later we were exploring Vermont as our new home. If you have not been to Vermont, it is one of the most beautiful places. In the winter the snowflakes are the size of quarters and fall with a rhythm that feels like a choreographed ballet. Looking out at the falling snow always feels like sitting in a snow globe.

The other seasons bring amazing joy as well including fields filled with dandelions. The season changes were just a part of the joy that became our heart’s home. The people are kind and love being in the outdoors. Everyone seems to have a sport that is their passion. Being able to discuss the fun things that people have done during the day over a cider from Stowe Cider or a delicious dessert just feeds the soul.

Now that we have lived here a total of 9 years, we have found places to explore, places to climb and fantastic places to dine. The entire state is filled with rich history and old-world villages, not to mention roads less traveled.

When was the last time you went into the hardware store and found a restaurant in the back and a bar in the front? JUST FABULOUS….

More stories about our explorations in the weeks to come.
